The St George Hospital Library - supporting patient care, teaching and research

The St George Hospital Library has supported clinical knowledge development for St George doctors, nurses and allied health staff since October 1948, when Doctor John Latham established the library with funds raised by a picnic held at the local Moorfield racecourse.

Located on the first floor of the Research and Education Building, the library’s primary mission is to provide timely, accurate and personalised information for clinical decision making to support patient care, teaching and research. It also provides a quiet place for reading, study meetings and research.

The library is run by a small staff of dedicated knowledge specialists who have created one of the best medical libraries in Australia using advanced online technologies to provide access to its up-to-date print and digital collection.

In 2015, librarian Marika Sablatura-Nagy, implemented a customised online portal giving secure, online access to the library’s 500-plus subscribers.  In July 2025, the library will launch the St George ‘Knowledge Springboard’ which will give secure 24/7 access to the complete collection of databases, e-books and e-journals.

‘By providing information services to our clinicians and researchers, the library’s work directly contributes to the health and wellbeing of people in the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District,” said John Holgate who has been Library Director since 2001.

“We also offer ongoing training in searching the literature, exploring databases and helping you with research project strategies. We’d love to see you soon in the library.”

The library also hosts the St George Hospital Museum, a fascinating collection containing exhibits from the hospital’s history since 1894. Visitors are welcome to browse the displays and learn about the hospital’s history.
